If I posted a picture that was a collage of The New Pornographers, Maple Leafs hockey, the Kids in the Hall, maple syrup, Alpha Flight, Scott Pilgrim, and Dave Coulier, would you explode from uncontainable Canadian pride?

PS - I dig that you dig comics. Me, too. What are favorites, aside from the aforementioned Alpha Flight and Scott Pilgrim?

To be honest I didn’t know Coulier was one of ours. Sorry about that. Swap him out for Neil Young or something and we’re all set.

I’m pretty typical comics-wise I suspect. I’ve got a slowly growing bookshelf with the usual suspects from Moore and Morrison. I’m a huge fan of Ellis and Immonen’s Nextwave, Joe Casey and Tom Scioli’s G0DLAND, Mignola’s Hellboy and his B.P.R.D. work (particularly the run that features Arcudi co-writing and art by Guy Davis). Anything that the team of Grant Morrison and Frank Quietly touch I’m sure to enjoy.

I was a Marvel zombie as a kid so I’m more likely to follow their ongoing universe than anything else.

There’s something special about pulling on bright spandex tights in the service of one’s country. And if your country champions ethnic diversity, marriage equality and universal health care, all the better! Let’s hear it for Canada!

Big Government never looked so good as when Puck, Guardian, Shaman, Sasquatch, Northstar, Aurora and Snowbird were paraded out for the cameras and flew off into action defending citizens of the North from monsters and villains, but their greatest challenges were to come from within. Who’d have thought the Canadian military would have a whole stable full of super-beings ready to add to the roster? One after another, crazy characters would enter the mix, and our heroes’s heads kept spinning. Finally, the team struck out on their own, fed up with manipulative forces and conspiracies from within their government. But did they hang up the tights? No way! There’s no word for “quit” in Canadian! (And if there was, the members of Alpha Flight sure wouldn’t say it!)

This is amazing. You have the whole history of the team on display via the file folders. Brilliance.

Baby Eagle, the garage / folk project of the Constantines’ Steve Lambke, is gearing up to release a new album this Tuesday on You’ve Changed Records.

Click through for a link to the new song “Day of our Departing.” I suppose this goes a small way to make up for the fact that the Cons may be done. Daniel Romano of Attack In Black’s involved in this project as well.

Julie tells me that despite my best efforts to work until I either reach enlightenment or implode spectacularly we should take a vacation this year. We’re thinking of driving up through Ottawa and Montreal.

Anyone have any ideas for places to eat or visit? My initial plan to see Parliament Hill then spend the rest of the trip alternating between Schwartz’s and La Banquise would probably result in a heart condition.

So I was in the Niagara Falls Review and the St Catharines Standard today talking about Check In Niagara. The picture in the Review article wasn’t at all as bad as I feared it was going to be, granted they got the URL wrong once and mangled a quote that somehow ran un-mangled in the Standard version. Oh well, awesome nonetheless.

Exclaim is speculating that the Constantines recent appearance at the Dawson City Music Festival this past July may have been the band’s last for the forseeable future.

While I don’t think this band should break their near-perfect track record by releasing material they aren’t 100% happy with, it does severely bum me out to see my favourite band drift into the “indefinite hiatus” abyss. Granted some of the Cons’ solo projects and other new work look fascinating, particularly Bryan Webb’s Parks Canada project out in Haida Gwaii.
